Unruly archival practices

Ankündigungstext: The tutorium will focus on 'unruly archival practices' by which critical-theoretical and artistic approaches to working with, in, besides and beyond archives is meant. We will discuss critical voices in postcolonial, feminist, and archival studies which challenge the hegemony of archives for the writing of history and knowledge production. These perspectives further propose alternative methodologies for researching and working with/outside of traditional archives. In addition to reading key texts which deal with the ethics of navigating institutional archives, we will look at examples of artists who actively intervene into archives through a diversity of methods and positionalities: reading against the grain, constructing counter-narratives, and re-working the material through often highly personal lenses. Participants will develop their own archival interventions based on the readings and discussions.
