LGBTQ POETRY & WORKSHOP

Bereich

This class will discuss poetry by queer and trans poets and offer a space for students to find their own creative voices. Class sessions will alternate between discussions of poetry, in-class workshop of peer pieces, and writing sessions. Discussions will establish themes, devices, and impact of trans and queer poetry. Workshop will give students the opportunity to receive indepth feedback from their peers about a current piece. Writing sessions will allow students to apply and cultivate skills with optional writing prompts. This class seeks to help students expand their abilities to analyze poetry, familiarize themselves with relevant themes in queer and trans poetry, read poetry through the lens of a reviewer, give constructive feedback, and use other writers’ works as inspiration for their own writing. Most importantly, my objective is to create a space for LGBTQ+ writers to cultivate their creative voices by »queering« perspectives on poetry reading and writing. Instruction language will be English. Class material will mostly focus on American writers, such as Xandria Phillips, Yanyi, Joy Young, Joshua Jennifer Espinoza, Audre Lorde, Adrienne Rich, Mary Oliver, Andrea Gibson, and others. Please only sign up if you’re actually interested in doing the readings & in writing poetry yourself. Only students who are committed to being active participants are encouraged to take this class.
