Colonial Afterlives – Manifestations of Coloniality in Contemporary Media & Discourse
This tutorial aims to uncover colonial afterlives, understood as the ways coloniality manifests in different forms in contemporary media and society. We will not only investigate colonial histories beyond the Anglophone realm whose commemoration is reflected in contemporary media but also consider abstract forms of colonialism. How does colonialism become a topic in contemporary society? When and in what contexts is it spoken about? From Germany‘s colonial past and the Japanese Empire to the World Cup‘s postcolonial dynamics and Super Bowl performances as sites of postcolonial resistance, this tutorial will present different ways of considering the enduring legacy of colonialism.
